Metal Detector Guide: Nokta Simplex+ Upkeep Instructions

Nokta Simplex+ maintenance

As a veteran detectorist having used the Simplex+ over New England’s varied landscapes, from damp seashores to muddy farms, I’ve found that maintenance is key to keeping your detector in working order. Whether a weekend warrior or every day hunter, this guide will safeguard your investment and provide maximum performance in all circumstances. I’ve done metal detector maintenance guides in the past, but this one is great for Nokta Simplex+ owners.

NOTE: Nokta has released the successor to the fan favorite Simplex+ — The Simplex Ultra, with some nice upgrades and addons.

Basic Care for Your Nokta Makro Simplex+

The reality is that metal detecting is often a dirty business. After a day of trudging around in soggy fields or saltwater beaches, your Simplex+ needs a little love. Here’s what I’ve found to be most effective, be you in the damp Southeast or coping with harsh winters in the North.

Coil Cleaning: The First Line of Defense

The coil bears the brunt of any abuse. For beachcombers, exposure to salt is a particular killer – I learned that to my detriment after a weekend at the Beach. Here’s my tried-and-tested cleaning procedure:

Remove the waterproof coil cover gently (it can be resistant when sandy) and wash each side in fresh water. Clean up remaining grit using a soft cloth – I use microfiber – and allow everything to air-dry completely before assembly. This quick procedure, done every other hunt, has ensured my coil is working like new even after two years of heavy use.

Advanced Cleaning: Beyond Cleaning Basics

As winter approaches or during protracted storage, I suggest a more intense approach. Leverage the Simplex+’s modular design – unscrew the coil and separate the shafts. Be careful around connection areas where grit tends to hide.

Cleaning Accessories

Over time, you may find that you need to get a little more aggressive in tackling tough residue that’s stuck to parts or accessories such as coil covers, stalks, or pin handles.

Pro tip: I use GT85 spray (available in most bike shops) on moving parts after cleaning. As it is distinct from WD-40, it leaves a PTFE coating that keeps everything smooth and coated, helpful to detectorists in rainy areas.

Seasonal Maintenance

Seasonal Maintenance Guide

Seasonal Maintenance Guide

Essential care considerations for optimal performance

☀️
Summer Care
  • Coil Seal Attention

Monitor and maintain coil seals more frequently in warm temperatures to prevent degradation

  • UV Protection

Ensure proper UV protection when equipment is in storage to prevent sun damage

  • Beach Cleaning

Implement faster cleaning protocols when using equipment on beaches due to salt and sand exposure

  • Battery Ventilation

Pay special attention to battery ventilation to prevent overheating in hot conditions

❄️
Winter Protection
  • Drying Protocol

Ensure thorough drying after use in damp conditions to prevent moisture damage

  • Cold Weather Batteries

Apply specialized cold weather treatment to batteries to maintain performance

  • Waterproofing Checks

Conduct additional waterproofing inspections to ensure protection against winter conditions

  • Temperature Control

Store equipment in controlled temperature environments to prevent freeze damage

Troubleshooting Common Problems

Having helped many Simplex+ users in our local detecting club, here are solutions to common problems:

  • Unstable readings? Clean coil connection points of dirt
  • Lowered depth? Check ground balance is correctly set
  • DRAINING THE BATTERY QUICKLY? Clean charging contacts
  • False signals? Modify sensitivity to soil conditions

Regional Maintenance Advice

Detecting in varying areas demands varying approaches to maintenance:

  • Beach Areas: Additional protection from corrosion required
  • Clay Soils: Clean more frequently
  • Rocky Areas: Shock-absorption checks in place
  • Damp Fields: Enhanced waterproof maintenance
