Modern smartphones contain a built-in magnetometer — the same sensor that powers your digital compass. It measures the ambient magnetic field around your phone. When you bring it near something ferromagnetic — iron, steel, certain alloys — the sensor detects that disturbance and the app interprets it as “metal.”
Here’s the catch: smartphones can’t detect all types of metal. That magnetometer picks up changes in magnetic fields, but non-ferrous metals like gold, silver, copper, and aluminum barely register. The stuff most of us actually want to find — coins, jewelry, relics — is almost invisible to a phone’s internal sensors. And even for ferrous targets, detection depth is typically limited to a few centimeters. Accuracy varies constantly due to interference and calibration drift.

Casual hobbyists who don’t want to invest in a $1,000+ dedicated control box will appreciate the cost savings. It doesn’t love being rained on, dropped, or left in direct sunlight for five hours. I’ve killed two phone screens just from normal detecting — sweat and grit getting into charging ports, dropping phones while taking photos of finds. I can’t imagine what’d happen if my phone was the control unit and something went wrong mid-hunt.
The Hidden Limitations of Smartphone Metal Detectors
Speaking honestly, there are real drawbacks that don’t get enough attention in the marketing materials.
Battery life is the obvious one. A traditional detector can run for 20+ hours on a set of rechargeable AAs. Your phone struggles to make it through a full day of normal use, let alone five hours of continuous Bluetooth streaming, GPS tracking, and screen-on visualization. You’ll need a serious external battery pack, and that adds weight and complexity.
Durability concerns me even more. I’ve detected in rain, dust, mud, and 100-degree California summer heat. My Minelab Equinox 900 handles all of that without complaint. My iPhone does not. Some companies are building rugged cases for this exact use case, but it’s an extra expense and another point of failure.
Connectivity issues are real. Bluetooth drops. App crashes happen. I’ve heard stories from fellow detectorists about losing a perfect target read because their phone decided to install a system update mid-sweep. When you’re in the field, reliability matters more than cool features.
Smartphone Metal Detectors Are the Future of the Hobby

Smartphones alone, using only their internal magnetometer, are not the future of detecting. They’re a party trick, useful for finding a lost screw in the carpet and not much else.

I don’t think dedicated control boxes are going away anytime soon. There will always be a place for rugged, purpose-built hardware that doesn’t depend on your daily driver device. But the line between what a traditional detector can do and what a smartphone-integrated system offers is blurring fast.
